Ip Man 2 : Hong Kong Blu Ray Review

Ip Man was, in my opinion, one of the best films released in the last few years, so the idea of a sequel was exciting especially with Sammo Hung in front of the camera as well as doing the choreography.

The film starts where the first left off with Ip Man in Hong Kong with his family, trying to earn a living by teaching Wing Chun kung ful on a rooftop and struggling to find any students.

After finally getting a reputation as a great fighter and teacher Master Ip runs foul of the rival Hung Gar school run by Sammo Hung and has to battle to continue teaching in the area. Then a British boxing champion enters the story and after humiliating Chinese boxing practitioners, Ip Man has to defend the honour of the Chinese and there martial arts.

Ip Man 2 starts off great, a mass fight in a fish market and Ip man’s battles with rival school teachers on top a table are brilliantly done, but after the first half it seems the film has no-where to go. The British are all shown as egotistic racists and the finale almost turns into Rocky 4 (See the film to see what i mean).

So overall a very good film, badly let down by the last reel.

The Blu ray from Hong Kong is a quality release with a superb 1080p HD transfer with no scratches or grain visible or distracting.Unfortunately it is locked to Region A, so you will need a region A or multi region player to play this title. Sound has excellent choices of Cantonese LPCM 7.1, Cantonese Dolby TrueHD 7.1, Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, Mandarin DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 and Mandarin Dolby Digital 5.1 EX. For the record, Universe Laser & Video Co. and have provided optional English and Traditional Chinese subtitles for the main feature.

Extras are: Interviews with all the main cast, making of, the shooting of 4 big scenes, shooting diary, deleted scenes, trailers. All extras are subtitled.

All in all an excellent release and a must buy if you can play region A discs.
