A new box set called The Samurai Trilogy will be released in the UK on Blu ray by Criterion in September. The three films in the collection are Musashi Miyamoto (1954), Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955) and Duel at Ganryu Island (1956).
Directed by Hiroshi Inagaki and starring the great Toshiro Mifune, these films were one of Japan’s most successful exports of the 1950s, fabulous tales of combat and self-discovery.
Special Edition box set features:
- New high-definition digital restorations of all three films, with uncompressed original mono soundtracks
- New interviews with translator and historian William Scott Wilson about the real-life Musashi Miyamoto, the inspiration for the hero of the films.
- New English subtitle translations
- A booklet featuring new essays by film historian Stephen Prince
- Released September 5th
