Triple Threat – Review

Director Jesse V Johnson knows how to make a great action film with movies such as Accident Man and Savage Dog and here goes all out with a cast of the best action stars from the East and West, what comes out is the very enjoyable Triple Threat.

When a hit contract is taken out on a billionaire’s daughter (Celina Jade) intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate, a team of wanted mercenaries (Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen with help from Iko Uwais), must take on a group of professional assassins (Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping) to stop them from hitting their target.

While the story is nothing new, the film itself is a non stop action festival with guns, explosions and of course expertly crafted fight scenes. The cast are each given a chance to shine, Tony Jaa gets to show a more humorous side for a change, Iko Uwais shows he has lost none of his combat skills and Scott Atkins almost steals the show as a nasty no nonsense villain with a sharp tongue.

Whats nice is that all of the stars are given the chance to show what they are capable of and it sets the scene nicely for 3 one on one confrontations at the climax.
Michael Jai White displays great power and even Jeeja Yanin gets a literally explosive cameo. No silly wirework here, which has spoilt many recent films from Hong Kong, this is old school full contact choreography and its all the better for it.

Some of the English dialogue is a little stilted from some of the non native English speaking cast, but overall with this movie you get what it says on the tin, a full blown action extravaganza and all should be applauded for producing a very enjoyable movie with such a small budget.

It has taken a long time for the film to get released because of the deal with Chinese co-producers but it was worth the wait and is now available on DVD and Blu ray in various countries. The USA gets a Blu ray / DVD combi release (out in May) while the UK yet again gets stuck with DVD only release in June.

If your a fan of any of the stars of this film and like your action grounded and non stop then Triple Threat is well worth checking out.
