Lau Kar Leung made many classic movies for the Shaw Brothers Studio, but after they closed their doors and stopped production, he still made some great films, and Operation Scorpio was one of them, although he was a co-star and not the director this time.
Yu Shu (Chin Kar Lok) is a bit of a daydreamer and also a great artist, sketching figures whenever he gets the chance, but one day on his way home from school, he saves a young lady from being sold into slavery but also gets the wrath of gangsters who want her back.
One of the gang leader’s sons, Sunny, who is an incredible fighter, is played by Kim Won Jin, who is very protective and will kill anyone who crosses him. Meanwhile, Yu Shu befriends a local Kung fu and bodybuilding club and a talented noodle chef, played by Lau Kar Leung,
Things come to a head when they want the girl back and after learning skills taught to him by his new friends, the stage is set for a brutal final battle.
Chin Kar Lok was one of the finest stuntmen in Hong Kong at the time, doubling for many, including Jackie Chan, but never really had the charisma to become a successful leading man.
He is very good here, showing some great acrobatic skill, but it is Kim Won Jin who steals the show, with amazing kicking skills and a unique Scorpion style, it is crazy that he never really did much after this film. Lau Kar Leung is also great in his role, an older man who hides his Kung Fu skills until he has no other choice.
His fight with Kim as well as a battle using a three-sectioned staff, are a real highlight. It is Yuen Tak who takes on the choreographic duties on this film, although I’m sure Master Lau also made a big contribution.
The film has a very old-school feel, which is no bad thing and thankfully wirework, although seen, is used sparingly.
While the story may be a little flimsy, it is made up for by the superb action, and it was a great shame this was a flop at the Hong Kong box office.
The film was released on DVD some time ago in the UK by Hong Kong Legends in a very nice package, but now has got the HD treatment from 88 Films. Picture quality is certainly improved, and it is a worthy upgrade with some good special features.
A classic martial arts movie and one which you may never see being made again, this is a worthy addition to anyone’s collection.
